People really need to stop making assumptions about identity and privilege. I may look white and present as a female, but this should not put me in some villainized category of “white-cis-femme-blahblahblah.” You do not know my class status, my trauma history, and my gender identity. I am fucking sick of how insular and negative the queer communities are in the different places I have lived, and I am sick of feeling alienated by those I am supposed to feel safest around. Stop putting people in boxes to validate your own pain. Your pain is totally valid without hating on everyone who is different from you, and I respect you for struggling as queer in a heteronormative world, but “queerness” is not a catty middleschool clique, and people tend to forget this. This is not targeting anyone specific, but the toxic, relentlessly “we must be underdog rebels and hate all the breeders” attitude of contemporary queer identity politics. People are making queerness feel like a club I don’t want to be a part of. I don’t want to identify as anything anymore, just a good person who by coincidence is not attracted to people in a “mainstream” way.
DON’T CALL ME CIS. DON’T CALL ME FEMME. DON’T CALL ME WHITE AND PRIVILEGED. CALL ME MEG. CALL ME DUDE. CALL ME A NICE PERSON WHO CARES ABOUT HUMANS AND HATES SEEING THEM TREAT EACH OTHER LIKE SHIT. CALL ME A GOTH OR A BADASS. CALL ME AN ASSHOLE IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME. I AM JUST SICK OF THIS SHIT.
Agreed. Even though I fit into a lot of definitions of queerness and feel kinship with some of the ideas and people involved, I’ve always been put off by this bullshit. Though honestly I’m someone who always feels wrong in groups and is cynical towards them as a general rule, even if I connect with many concepts that such groups give birth to.
Individuals can be fucking awesome, but groups and strict ideologies always fuck shit up in the end.
Queer culture has done a lot of good for a lot of people. It’s given a home to people who are otherwise homeless and ignored, and that’s really fucking good. Lots of good has come of it. But as with everything else humanity does, there’s a lot of bullshit.
I advise people to embrace the parts that help them and enhance their lives and cut out the toxic bullshit that doesn’t.
